Karen Gillan, who stars as “Amy Pond” on “Doctor Who,” will attend Wizard World shows in Philadelphia (June 19-22), Chicago (Aug. 21-24) and Austin (Oct. 2-4) in the coming months.
The former model appeared in Series 5-7 of “Doctor Who,” beginning in 2010, as the new companion to the eleventh Doctor Matt Smith.
Karen Gillan was born and raised in Inverness, Scotland. At 16 She left home to study acting in Edinburgh, Scotland. Karen later moved to London to the prestigious Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts.
Karen got her first career break in modeling, and has worked for a number of shows , and designers. In 2006 Karen’s first television break was in Scottish detective drama Rebus, playing Terri Cotter in an episode entitled A Question of Blood. Next came Harley Street, in which Karen played a model called Holly. In 2008, Karen got her first longer term acting job – as a regular on The Kevin Bishop Show. That same year Karen also appeared as a Soothsayer in the Doctor Who episode The Fires of Pompeii alongside David Tennant and Catherine Tate.
In 2010 Karen began her unique role as Amy Pond in the 5th series of BBC’s Doctor Who. She was the new companion to the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith. Karen went on to appear in series 6 -7 of Doctor Who ,once again as Amy Pond. It was a rollercoaster of emotions, as she experienced the ‘death’ of the Doctor, gave birth to daughter Melody (who was then kidnapped) and was then revealed to be the mother of River Song (the grown up Melody Pond).
In 2011, Karen went on to appear in her first theatre role, playing Shirley in the John Osborne play “Inadmissible Evidence”, in which she stared alongside Douglas Hodge. During 2012, Karen travelled to Alabama to film Oculus, a horror movie in which Karen co-stars alongside Katee Sackhoff.
In 2013, Karen starred in an indie romantic comedy called Not Another Happy Ending, along with Stanley Weber and Skins actress Freya Mavor. She was also added to the regular cast of Adult Swim’s NTSF:SD:SUV.
