As originally reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Jeff Goldblum will reprise his role of Dr Ian Malcolm in Jurassic World 2, due to be released June 22, 2018.
In the original Jurassic Park, released in 1993. Dr Malcolm is recruited by attorney Donald Gennaro to help evaluate the safety of the park on behalf of the park’s investors. Interestingly, the death of his employer is a direct result of Malcolm’s actions in the movie, albeit accidentally.
For those of us who read the actual book by Michael Crichton. I remember well the death of Malcolm at the end of the book, which at the time seemed very unnecessary. I mean really, he survives the entire time with this horrible leg injury, only to find out in one short paragraph that he died.
However, good old pressure by fans and Steven Spielberg himself prompted Crichton to write a sequel. Thus The Lost World: Jurassic Park was born and miraculously, Dr Malcolm was alive! Rumors of his death had been greatly exaggerated. He headed back to the world of dinosaurs to rescue his girlfriend, and his daughter came along for the ride. I mean, what would Jurassic Park be without kids in danger? Dr Malcolm saves the day and the greedy corporate bad guys feed a lot of dino bellies once again!
With just a single mention in Jurassic Park III, a reference to a book he wrote, and also an appearance of said book (or another book he has written about dinosaurs) in Jurassic World, Dr Malcolm has been physically absent and sorely missed for a few movies. Gladly, the wisecracking, occasionally married doctor will return to star alongside Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas in Jurassic World 2. Presumably he is looking for more material for another book.
Personally, I really think we need the return of Ray Arnold (John Arnold in the book), played by Samuel L. Jackson in Jurassic Park. Sure we saw his severed arm, but we never saw his body. So let’s say he survived the removal of his arm and is back for revenge with his genetically grown new Raptor arm. During a crucial part of the film, he suddenly appears in the doorway. Malcolm turns to Owen and says, “See, no one could have predicted an old, one armed dead man would uh… suddenly show up with a machine gun”. I can just hear Ray screaming “Hold on to your butts!” while letting off a barrage of machine gun fire into a rampaging SuperUltraMegaSaurous.
Jurassic World 2 (I’m sure they will have a catchier title, maybe Jurassic World: When Worlds Collide) will be a Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment release.
