Ogre Designer’s Edition Hits Stores December 6th

OgreAn Official Street Date has been set for Steve Jackson Games Ogre Designer’s Edition and that date is December 6th. Once that date rolls around, you should be able to get your own copy from your FLGS! Also, the Ogre Red/Blue Dice will also be available on the 6th. Here’s a bit of info on Ogre for those of you who don’t remember the original.

Ogre was Steve Jackson’s first game. It’s a fast moving, hex-based wargame in which the defender has a force of armor and infantry. The attacker has a single giant tank, the Ogre, with many guns . . . and it can only be destroyed a piece at a time.

Originally published in 1977, it was a hit as the first “Microgame,” and is now considered a classic.  Over 25 years after its release, Ogre earned a spot in James Lowder’s popular book Hobby Games: The 100 Best. Now the Ogre is back . . . in a gigantic new “designer’s edition” that will be the crown of any game collection. And it will retail for only $100.

“Only” $100? Yes . . . and it’s cheap at that price says an unconfirmed source at Steve Jackson Games. “Based on the contents, this game should sell for $295, but we are sticking to the price we announced a couple of years ago.”

And what does it contain?

ogrenewThe Designer’s Edition will weigh over 15 pounds, because it’s stuffed full of maps and counters. The game has a “case pack” of one, so each individual game will come to you in a cardboard overwrap.

There are five giant-sized mapboards . . . one for the original Ogre, and four even larger from the follow-on sets G.E.V.,Shockwave,and Battlefields. Hexes are 1.5 inches across. Dozens of small and large terrain overlays let you tweak the maps a little . . . or a lot. The four large maps are geomorphic, so you can set up a game area more than 4×5 feet. . . and rearrange it in thousands of combinations!

Ogre will ship with more than a dozen sheets of counters, each 10” x 17”. The regular counters are giant-sized, full-color, and two-sided, with highly legible unit names and stats. There are hundreds of flat armor and infantry counters for various factions,1.5mm thick, and that’s only the beginning . . .

The gigantic Ogres, as well as the laser towers,Command Posts, and other buildings, are represented by oversized, constructable 3-D counters. There are more than 30 Ogres in the set! These are not thin plastic, but heavy 2mm cardstock, printed on both sides. The biggest Ogres are nearly 3” long! The box will include a custom insert to hold the assembled units, so you won’t have to break them down once you build them.

The classic Ogre and G.E.V. rules (plus some of the material from later supplements) have been completely revised and reorganized into a full-color rulebook. There’s a separate scenario book, and a handy player reference sheet (two copies included). The books will include both classic Ogre graphics and new art by Brandon Moore.

Plus:

• Record sheet masters for 10 different types of Ogre

• Two custom 19mm acrylic dice

• A reprint of the popular Ogre Blueprint Poster

And it’s coming December 6th to a game store near you.
